UN to Convene “No-Nonsense” Climate Summit in 2023

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has announced plans to convene a “no-nonsense” climate ambition summit in September 2023. Guterres warned that there would be “no room for back-sliders, greenwashers, blame-shifters” or a repackaging of old pledges at the summit. The goal of the summit is to require major emitters to make an extra effort to reduce emissions in the current decade and provide support to those who need it in order to achieve the target of halving emissions by 2030 and reducing them to net-zero by 2050. Guterres stated that the 1.5-degree goal is “gasping for breath” and called on every leader to step up and take serious, new climate action
