Australia Reviews Visa System to Address Worker Shortage

As Australia grapples with a severe worker shortage, the country is conducting a review of its entire visa and immigration system in an effort to rapidly increase its workforce. The review, set to be released in February, comes as Australia struggles to find enough skilled and unskilled workers to fill jobs and drive the economy. Australia currently has the second worst skills shortage among the world’s richest countries, following Canada. The shortage is particularly acute in the hospitality, tourism, construction, technology, agriculture, mining, and trades sectors, with almost half a million workers needed across these industries. The shortage is also being felt in regional and remote areas, where seasonal farm labor is in high demand but in short supply due to COVID-related border closures.
